New Welcome Center Updates

January 21, 2010

Although it has been a while since we posted photos of the Welcome Center progress a lot has been happening. Work continues on installing the utilities for the building (part of the building has been sealed off so that work can be done in the cold). Concrete is being poured on the first floor and work on the exterior skin of the elevator shaft continues.  In addition to work on the building, construction of the retaining wall for the bridge that will go over the bioswale has also started.  Continue to check in on our progress here or in person - the gardens are spectacular in the snow!

There has been a lot of exciting construction going on over the last week - the elevator shaft concrete mold was completed, electrical lines were put in, the steel arrived and the frame started going up.  As you can see from the pictures below - the building is really shaping up!

We're moving right along... over the last two weeks work was completed on a second story wall (the tall concrete structure on the left in the picture below) along with installation of waterproofing and insulation materials and sanitary lines.

The Nevin Welcome Center is really starting to take shape, here you can see its development from Judd Falls Road, looking west beyond the Lewis Building.

This week soil was brought in to start backfilling around the building now that the foundation is set.

This week the building continued to take shape with the molds for the elevator and interior second story walls being constructed.  Work also started on the irrigation lines, data and voice lines.  Additionally LEED dumpsters were delivered and placed on site. These dumpsters are for separating and recycling of used construction material.

Another week of exciting developments on the construction site - it's amazing how quickly the building is starting to take shape.  This week work on the building's foundation continued and the first recognizable element of the building - the elevator shaft was started (pictured below - it's the black and red box in the foreground).
