With more than 300,000 different plant species, scientists have developed a system to categorize them and to understand how land plants evolved from algae. In this program, students will examine different plants and try to classify them into groups as they think about the adaptive changes that allowed small mosses to evolve into big trees. In the winter garden, students will visit stations to observe plant characteristics and become familiar with the pine family and its naked seeds (better known as cones). In the herb garden, students learn about flowering plants in the mint family and locate as many mints as they can find. Students develop a curiosity of the natural world around them and learn how to organize the plants, how they evolved, and how diverse the plant family tree is!
