Polson Natural Area

The site includes flat upland, and a slope bisected by small ravines. The slopes are covered by maple-beech forest. The soil of the rather flat hilltop is shallow to bedrock and is seasonally wet. The dominant vegetation is oak-hickory and mixed oak forest. A recent addition to the Polson Preserve, immediately east of the original tract, is very steeply-sloping and interesting to geologists for the glacially oversteepened through valley with its exposed shale bedrock layers.
